Om Shruti Taneja Johansson

My area of interest has largely revolved around children in difficult circumstances ranging from street children, adoption and children with disabilities. My specialization is particularly in the field of developmental disabilities, in which my work experience is from special schools, regular schools, residential schools, respite care and residential homes in England, Sweden and India.

My current research is in the area of disability, education and inclusion, ranging from the Swedish context to a wider international perspective. In autumn 2015 I defended my thesis titled “Autism-in-context. An investigation of schooling of children with a diagnosis of autism in urban India”. This connects to my main area of interest in Southern perspectives and practices related to inclusive education, and to the education of children with disabilities.

Another area of interest is the interaction between culture and autism. More specifically, how cultural understandings shape perspectives and practices across settings.

Currently I am working on a research project “Participation for all? School and post-school pathways of young people with functional disabilities”, supported by the Swedish Research Council. The project focus upon the educational pathways of two groups of young people: young people who are deaf and those with ADHD. The study aims to generate knowledge that can contribute to identifying successful criteria for transitions to adulthood for children and young adults.

Teaching interests are mainly courses within the field of special education, both with within the special- educator and teacher programs and also independent courses. Qualitative research methods is another area I teach. I also supervise students at the advanced level. I am currently course director for the following courses:
- Learning and Development Concerning Pupils with Intellectual Disability
- Neuropsychiatric disabilities in an inclusive perspective
- Special needs education and disabilities in the spectrum of autism
- Special needs education in a changing society
- Educational research method: Observation
