Current research projects

Participation for all? (PAL)

The Participation for All (PAL) project focus is upon the schooling and the post-school situation of two groups of young people: young people who are deaf and those with ADHD. This project aims to (i) map the current school placements for children and young people with two types of functional disabilities, FD, in Sweden, (ii) study and identify key factors that enable a successful and meaningful transition to adulthood for the groups focused, as well as (iii) identify successful criteria for transition to adulthood for young people with FD in general as well as the two focused groups specifically based on a synthesis of international and Swedish research. The project is funded from 2016–2020 by a grant from the Swedish Research Council (VR).

A school for the deviant: A study of teaching- and learning practices and the formation of identity in special classes

The general background of the project is an interest in how schools deal with diversity between children when organizing teaching and learning practices. At present, neuropsychiatric diagnosis, as for example ADHD or Aspergers are used widely in schools as categories for classifying pupils and their difficulties in school, for organizing teaching and learning opportunities, and for the distribution of economic and other kinds of resources. On a public and political level, these segregating solutions will have consequences for the idea of a school for all, but it will also have a decisive influence on children’s identity, learning and development. However, there is yet very little research on how the schools are dealt with this kind of difficulties in the learning practices in the classroom. The proposed project is supposed to be a contribution to an increased knowledge on this topic.

The project addresses questions about gender and achievement and is a cooperation between two departments within the faculty of Education in Gothenburg and the university college of Borås.

Causes and Effects of School Segregation in Swedish Schools – CESS

The aim of this project is to investigate effects and consequences of the recent reforms of educational policy and practise on educational equality in Sweden. The main hypothesis to be tested is that voucher programs with free school choice exacerbate social and ethnic segregation of students, which enhances the peer and school contextual effects, and these changes, in turn, cause increased achievement differences between schools.

Content and Language Integration in Swedish Schools – CLISS

The main aim with the CLISS project is to investigate how students develop their written, academic language proficiency in English and Swedish during their three years in upper secondary school. Two groups of students are involved in the study – those who use Swedish as the main language of instruction and those who use English.

Cohort-sequential longitudinal databases Evaluation through follow-up – ETF

The project comprises a nationally representative sample of pupils consisting of those born on the 5th, 15th or 25th of any month in 1948. The material covers some 12 000 pupils. The collection of the data was commenced when the majority of the pupils were in Grade VI (aged about 12), that is to say in 1960/61.

Changes in reading literacy during 30 years: An international comparison – FIL

The purpose of the project is to investigate changes in reading literacy among 9-10 year olds in Sweden between 1979 and 2001 and to compare patterns of change with the reading literacy development in other countries. Two national studies in Sweden now indicate that the reading level among school children has decreased compared to some 10 years ago. Several potential explanations have been suggested, but few have been investigated empirically.

Effects of teacher qualification: development over time, across school subjects and between different groups of students (ELK)

The project seeks to contribute to the understanding of direct and indirect effects of teacher qualification on student achievement. The purposes of the project are to: 1) investigate effects of teachers´ qualification on student reading literacy test scores, 2) explore whether there are interaction effects between teacher qualification and student social background, and 3) examine to what degree effects of teacher formal qualification on student performance in reading and science/mathematics relate to self-perceived competence/self-efficacy and competence as measured by students?

The presence and influence of universities on the closest social environment should be strengthened. Cultural heritage is diverse, but in every dimension (European, regional, local) it can perform functions that integrate communities and include underrepresented groups in the social life.

Individual and institutional factors influencing the transfer from higher education to the labour market – TEL

The main purpose of the proposed project is to examine the transfer from higher education to labour market with special attention to gender and class differences. The specific purposes to study are: (1) if some programs are less likely to lead to employment within the area of the degree that has been obtained; (2) if a degree from a prestigious program lead to different employment opportunities for different groups of students with respect to gender and class; and (3) if an equivalent degree from a newly created institution of higher education gives the same employment chances as one from an old university?

RIDDLE is a research project at University of Gothenburg in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. The purpose of the project is to try out methods to facilitate for all children to learn how to read. The basic idea is that children that get early support in their early linguistic and phonological awareness get a better initial starting point when they meet the written language.
