About Thomas Barow

Research

In my research I am dealing with special and inclusive education in a pedagogical, didactical, social and historical perspective, both nationally and internationally. Currently I am doing a study on children’s well-being in inclusive settings and on how categorisation processes are shaped regarding SEN. My earlier research work was focused upon the transition from school to working life both in Sweden and internationally. In my dissertation and the following historical studies I focused on the so called “care of the feeble-minded” in Sweden. A list of my publication can be found here.

Teaching

I am teaching and supervising foremost in the special education programmes (second cycle). Moreover I gained comprehensive experiences in various teacher education programmes and in disability studies.

Memberships

Since 2011 I have been the convener of the network 12 Inclusive Education as a part of the Nordic Educational Research Association (NERA/NFPF). Moreover I am member of the Swedish Educational Research Association (SWERA), Svenska Nätverkförhandikappforskning (Swedish Network on Disability Research, SNHF), board member of  Funktionshinderforskning i Väst (Disability Research in Western Sweden, HafV) and member of Handikapphistoriska föreningen (Association on Disability History, HHF). In the University of Gothenburg I am associated research leader of the Platform for Research in Inclusive education and School development (PRIS).
