About Caroline Berggren

Research interests
My general research interest is social division based on class and gender. So far, I have had the opportunity to work with the selection of applicants to higher education and with the selection of higher education graduates to the labour market. Ongoing project is about student mobility in Sweden, students' choice of higher education institutions.

Worldwide, Sweden is considered a country of equal opportunity. My research shows, however, that old structures show up in new forms, despite current policies on equality. For example, primarily men from privileged backgrounds took advantage of the alternative entrance routes to higher education, which had been established to facilitate under-represented groups of students. Another example is that, despite women’s increased participation in higher education and high completion rate, the odds are higher that male graduates from privileged backgrounds will end up in better paid positions. This phenomenon takes place regardless of an actual match between their credentials and the employment offer.

I work with large scale statistical analyses and use data from national registers, but, if an opportunity presents itself, I would not hesitate to work small scale as well.
