About Monica Reichenberg

Research interests
My research area involves reading, primarily reading comprehension. My research questions are: How can texts be made comprehensible to readers? How can readers’ reading strategies be developed? Moreover, second-language reading has also be an object of my research.

In my dissertation (2000) I investigated 833 students’ comprehension of various text versions in history and social studies. After that I carried out intervention studies with students in 7th and 10th grade with the aim of determining to what extent structured text discussions about textbook passages could be a tool for students to create meaning in what they read.

At present I am pursuing a similar study with students in 5th grade. I have also made a study with the aim of examining comprehension of simple texts containing societal information among people who have been deaf since childhood.

Teaching interests
I teach and supervise about reading and what research has to say today about dyslexia, reading and writing difficulties, and textbook analysis.

reading comprehension, doctored text, reading strategies, structured text discussions, poor readers
