About Mattias Nylund

Research interest

I am a member of the research project Critical education in vocational subjects? Civic knowledge in vocational programmes, policy documents and classroom practice, financed by the Swedish research council (2016-2019). I am together with Per-Åke Rosvall coordinator for the project Vocational Education, Transitions, marginalization and social justice, which represents a collaboration between the research networks JustEd and Nord-Vet. I am also conducting a study on value conflicts in Swedish apprenticeship education as well as a study on how the identity of vocational teachers impacts their view on what is important knowledge. My studies are grounded in the traditions of curriculum theory and sociology of education.

My primary research group is KRIT (Critical Theory). I have a particular interest in the theoretical tradition that has its origin in the work of the educational sociologist Basil Bernstein.

I was a member of the editorial board for the journal Education and Democracy (Utbildning och demokrati) 2008-2015, and am since 2015 part of the journals editorial council. I am also a member of the Nordic Centre of Excellence Justice through education in the Nordic countries (team 4) since 2013, and was assistant manager of the Centre for Vocational Skills and Knowledge (Centrum för yrkeskunnande) 2012-2014.

Teaching

Much of my teaching is conducted at the vocational teacher programme, where I also am a program supervisor and hold the course leadership of a couple of courses (LYK10G and LYK20G). Otherwise, I teach at all levels at the university, from introductory courses about theories of learning and school governance (e.g. LYK10G, LGK20G) to tutoring Essays and lecturing at PhD-courses.
